Once an instructor has required LockDown Browser for an exam, it is very easy for students to download, install, and use LockDown Browser to take their online test. The following steps guide a student through the process. Instructors can provide steps 1 through 4 of this article to students for guidance if necessary.

Some learning systems require that students first open a standard browser, log in to the course, locate the exam, and then use the "Launch LockDown Browser" button. This will automatically launch LockDown Browser. Students can then start the exam (Step 4 below).

1. Download the LockDown Browser installer package. Depending on the browser setting, it may download as "" where "-x-xx" is the current version number.2. If the downloaded file did not automatically unzip, locate "" (usually in the Downloads folder), and double click on the file to start the Archiver to unzip the file.3. Locate the "Install Respondus LockDown Browser xxxxxxxxx.pkg" to start the actual LockDown Browser installer. 4. Accept all the default prompts to install LockDown Browser.5. Go to Finder->Applications and double click on the "LockDown Browser" icon (a world globe with padlock) to start LockDown Browser.

Faculty have the option of applying the Respondus LockDown Browser to assessments given in Canvas. When the LockDown Browser is applied, students will be unable to print, capture screen content, go to URL's or access other applications while taking assessments. Students will need to download and install the LockDown browser onto your device in order to access assessments that use the LockDown Browser. Once installed, you will use this application to login to Canvas whenever you take an assessment that uses the LockDown Browser. You will only need to use this browser to login to Canvas when taking an assessment that uses the LockDown Browser. Once it is installed, you do not have to install it again for a different assessment, even if it is in a different course.

Please Note: If you are using a Chromebook, the below installation link will direct you to the Chrome web store, at which point you should select Add to Chrome to install the Lockdown Browser Extension. After adding the extension, to use the Browser Extension when taking an assessment, log into Canvas and navigate to the exam that requires LockDown Browser. The LockDown Browser extension will be started automatically when an assessment requires it. This paragraph is for Chromebook users only. For all other devices, continue to Step 2 after downloading and installing the LockDown Browser.

If you have a Mac, click on Do you need the Mac Version? then click Install Now. If you have a Windows device, click Install Now. If having problems downloading to a Mac, use the Chrome browser to download.

Note: You won't be able to access an exam that requires LockDown Browser with a standard web browser. If this is tried, an error message will indicate that the test requires the use of LockDown Browser. Simply start LockDown Browser and navigate back to the exam to continue.

To install LockDown Browser on Mac OS X 10.6 or later:1. Download the Mac OS X 10.6 or later installation file.2. Double-click the downloaded zip file to extract the package file.3. Run the extracted package file.

To ensure security during MAP Growth testing, students on Windows or Mac desktops use a secure browser from NWEA. This browser restricts access to outside resources. You will download the browser from NWEA, and then install or distribute it to each computer.

If you encounter issues, contact NWEA support, and let them know the version number of the installed NWEA browser. On the PC, launch NWEA Secure Testing Browser from the Start menu and type: Ctrl+Alt+V.

Students will be prompted, when they access the Quiz in Canvas, to either launch the LockDown Browser and start the quiz, or to download LockDown Browser from a specified link. LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking tests in Blackboard Learn. It prevents students from printing, copying, visiting another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. If a Blackboard test requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Blackboard tests. It should not be used in other areas of Blackboard.

Windows or MacOnly use the download link unique to SCTC ( =738795795). It can also be found in your course. Instructors may have it in the syllabus, a Welcome message, or an announcement within the Blackboard class.

The Respondus LockDown Browser application is a separate browser that your instructor may require to take a test in Blackboard. To verify you are running the latest version, start Respondus LockDown Browser and select About from the toolbar, and then click Check for Update. The version will be displayed, and you will be able to download a newer version if one is available.

In general, for Blackboard Learn with "manual launch", it is important for students to close all standard browsers, start LockDown Browser only, log into Blackboard Learn, *wait* until the Blackboard Learn home page fully loads (no spinning circle in the browser tab), navigate to the course, *wait* until the course home page fully loads (no spinning circle in the browser tab), then go to the content area to start the direct link to the exam with "-Requires Respondus LockDown Browser" in the test title. Students should not use any "shortcut" or "notifications link" in the Blackboard Learn home page or course home page.
